Growing the Wizard of Oz Museum and Preserving Its Legacy

When I first began collecting rare Wizard of Oz books, I never imagined that my interest would eventually become a museum visited by families, travelers, and Oz enthusiasts in Florida. The journey began with literature and collecting, but over time it developed into something larger: a place where historical objects, familiar stories, and immersive experiences could introduce visitors to the world of Oz.

In the earlier chapters of this museum history, I described how my childhood interest in Oz led to years of research, the development of a rare book collection, and the opening of the Wizard of Oz Museum. I also shared the challenges and decisions involved in creating a public attraction.

Chapter 6 explores what happened as the museum continued to develop. It looks at how visitors helped the museum grow, why the original Oz books remain essential to its identity, and what I hope the museum can contribute in the future.

Growth, Discovery, and a Larger Purpose

The Wizard of Oz Museum first opened in Cape Canaveral and moved to Cocoa Beach in 2026. Throughout that journey, I have tried to balance two goals: creating an experience that visitors enjoy and preserving the literary and artistic history that inspired the museum.

These goals are closely connected. Visitors may discover the museum through reviews, travel recommendations, or immersive experiences. Once they arrive, they also have the opportunity to encounter rare books, historical illustrations, and memorabilia that reveal the deeper history of Oz.

The following five stories examine different parts of that development.

Why I Believe the Wizard of Oz Museum Is More Than a Tourist Attraction

What These Five Stories Have in Common

Although each story explores a different subject, all five reflect the same belief: a museum's value comes from the relationship between its collection and the people who encounter it.

Rare books preserve the history of Oz. Historical memorabilia helps explain its cultural influence. Immersive experiences provide additional ways for visitors to engage with art and imagination. Visitor recommendations help introduce these experiences to people who may not otherwise discover them.

I hope Chapter 6 helps readers understand how the Wizard of Oz Museum has continued to develop while remaining connected to the collecting and research that began my journey.

What began as my personal discovery of Oz has become an opportunity to share its history with generations of visitors.
